Best Practice of this action
Rating Guideline
1 star Address high energy use lighting first, such as any ice rinks/athletic fields, working with the local utility as appropriate. Report relamping of parking lots/ramps under BPA 4.7.
2 star Relamp/improve two-thirds of building/facility lighting.
3 star Relamp/improve all building/facility lighting.
Resources
  • The Minnesota Division of Energy Resources operates the Guaranteed Energy Savings Program for cities to lock in verifiable ongoing energy savings through performance contracting of deep retrofits - including exterior and interior building lighting - without capital appropriations. GESP is most appropriate, as a rule of thumb, for situations including at least one of the following: city utility bills are around $150,000 or more; possible project cost is around $350,000 or more; city population is around 10,000 or more.
  • Use the International Dark-Sky Association Outdoor Lighting Basics guide to promote reduced/smarter outdoor lighting. See the GreenStep Dark Skies best practices for more.
